And not only this, but we also celebrate in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:3-5)
Have you ever been pushed to the limit in a workout? You give your all, but even then, you must push a little more to get the outcome you desire, whether gaining muscle or losing weight. The pain and exhaustion of these moments can feel overwhelming and pointless because we don’t see immediate results. Similarly, when we face trials in life, it is painful. Whether it is a heavy loss or a bump in the road, we feel the very real pain that comes like a wave. It is hard to take the next step to look inside and see that God is doing a refining work inside of us through these hardships.
Earlier this week, we saw Peter and John seeking to grow in their faith alongside many others in their community, even after facing significant hardship. Their trials were not in vain, and the pain was not pointless. They saw the hardship they faced as an opportunity to remind themselves of who God is and grow deeper in their faith in Him. That is the point of what Paul said in today’s verse as well.
Next time you face something difficult, instead of asking why God is punishing you, ask Him how He can work through you. As a follower of Jesus, you can be confident that He is never leaving you alone or abandoning you in your troubles. He who sacrificed all for us will surely be with us, even when we feel like we have nothing left. And He who redeems all things will do His redeeming work in our lives, bringing greater beauty and hope from the points of pain.
