But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.

From a frighteningly early age, we learn how to lie. We learn how to shift the blame or outright deny our sin. This is often funny with toddlers, lying about not having any cookies before dinner while their faces are covered in chocolate. We laugh at these stories because the sin is so evident that denial is pointless. While the child may feel like the sin was only known to them, easy to cover up with a lie, we can see the evidence of their sin. As we become adults, we get better at hiding our sins. We can say one thing and do another or deny our blame without feeling like anyone noticed.
While we may feel the relief of not having our sin evident to others, we are no different from the young cookie thief; our sin is known to God and nothing is hidden from Him. David Guzik says, “The art of being a hypocrite depends on concealment, but one day all will be revealed. We can only be hypocrites before men, but never before God. He sees through the actor’s mask.”[1] Even when we have covered our bases, sweeping up the mess our sin has caused, our sin is still as plain as day to God. Thankfully, the same God who sees our sin is ready to forgive us when we come to Him in confession and repentance. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
